The Future of Clinical Placement Logbooks: What a Modern Logbook Should Do

For years, early-career practitioners across psychology, counselling, social work, allied health, and education (such as pre-service teachers on practicum) have struggled with the administrative burden of tracking their clinical and practical hours. Managing spreadsheets, hunting down supervisors for signatures, and calculating the ratios of direct client contact versus supervision or observation hours is a tedious, error-prone process.
Drafting Hours From the Work You Already Do
A good logbook should not make you type every session twice. If your sessions are already in a calendar or documented as notes, the logbook can draft a direct-contact entry from them, with the duration filled in.
You should stay in control: the tool drafts, you add your reflections, tag the competencies you demonstrated, and submit.
Several Placement Sites
Many provisionals work across several settings under one placement — a private practice on Mondays, a school on Wednesdays, a hospital on Fridays. A logbook should let you record which site each session happened at and route each entry to the right supervisor.
A Simple Way for Supervisors to Sign Off
Supervisors should not need spreadsheets or wet signatures. Look for a review view that shows a supervisor their trainees, progress by site, and pending entries to approve, with each approval time-stamped.
Board-Ready Exports
When you finish your placement and need to submit to AHPRA, ACA, PACFA, the AASW or your teacher registration board, you should be able to export approved hours by site and activity type, with a supervisor declaration ready to sign.
CPD Tracking After Registration
Once you are fully registered, CPD tracking becomes the ongoing task: charting active CPD and peer consultation hours against your board's minimums.
